Foremans Road - Woodhill - Landslip

The Shoalhaven was declared a Natural Disaster Area 5 March 2022 after an East Coast Low and rain events. This had a major impact on Kangaroo Valley and surrounding communities, landslips affecting roads and property. Foremans Road, Woodhill, was severely impacted by these rain events. Immediate works were carried out to remove debris, clearing the road for traffic movement as soon as possible.

About the works

Landslip repair sites and planned road closures 

Site 1. DM00882 - rural address 43 - full road closure is extended to 30 April 2024, Mondays to Saturdays 7.30am to 4.30pm. No vehicle access during closures. Pedestrian access via escort by Traffic Controller during closure times. Load limit: 5-tonne. 

Works: piling works and capping beam complete. First row of mass blocks installed before Easter.

Note: new landslip has occurred following the recently declared natural disaster (AGRN1119) 7 April 2024, repair design is pending. 

Site 2. DM00555 - rural address 32 - full road closure is extended to 30 April 2024, Mondays to Saturdays 7.30am to 4.30pm. No vehicle access during closures. Pedestrian access via escort by Traffic Controller during closure times. Load limit: 5-tonne. 

Works: capping beam complete. Final pavement works pending completion of Site 1. 

Note: minor damage has occurred following the recently declared natural disaster (AGRN1119) 7 April 2024, repairs will be carried out with Site 1 repair works.

3/4/2024 - AnnouncementCompletion date is revised to Tuesday 16 April 2024, weather permitting, due to designers' delayed advice.

26/3/2024 - AnnouncementRoad open over Easter weekend. From Good Friday 29 March to Easter Monday 1 April 2024, Foremans Road will be open and repair works will be shut down. Repair works resume Tuesday 2 April 2024. Council appreciates your patience and extends good will for a safe Easter weekend.

12/3/2024 - AnnouncementClosure extension. Contractor Symal has advised that due to wet ground conditions planned road closures are extended to 10 April 2024. Full road closures Mondays to Saturdays, 7.30am to 4.30pm. No vehicle access during closures, pedestrian access via escort by Traffic Controller. Find more details under - About the works. 

27/2/2024 - Announcement: Closures extended. Contractor Symal advised that planned road closures and expected completion is extended to 26 March 2024, due to recent wet weather conditions. Full road closures Mondays to Saturdays, 7.30am to 4.30pm. No vehicle access during closures, pedestrian access via escort by Traffic Controller. Council appreciates your patience and extends good will for a safe 2024.

  • 08/08/2023 - Site 1. DM00882 Works start Wednesday 11 October through to Thursday 26 October 2023. Site 2. DM00555 Works start Friday 27 October through to Friday 17 November.

  • 30/03/2023 - Landslip repair drop-in sessions: Thu 30 March 4 – 5pm Thu 13 April 4 – 5pm. Drop by the Kangaroo Valley Hall (177 Moss Vale Rd) where Symal and Council will answer your questions about upcoming roadworks.

  • 17/03/2023 - Kangaroo Valley Information Session on Friday 17 March, 7pm - 8pm (followed by BBQ) at KV Community Hall. Meet contractor Symal and get briefing on the start of landslip works.
  • 04/03/2023 - The latest construction program proposed by contractor Symal for the 38 the Major Landslip repair work has been released. The construction program lists the planned start and finish date for each of the 38 land slips. A summary of the construction program is available on the  Major Landslip Package Planned Program of Work. A copy of the construction program is also available on the right-hand side of the Master Project Page in the related documents section.
  • 15/2/2023 - Contract awarded - Council has resolved to proceed with the appointment of infrastructure and construction group Symal to repair the 38 major landslips. Council has provided Symal a schedule of works which prioritises the most urgent landslips with the first round of works to begin in late March 2023. 2022 Works history

  • 3/11/2022 - Following months of geotechnical investigations, design work and tender preparation, Council is now seeking contractors to bid on the 38 landslips deemed a priority. Submissions close 6 December 2022.

  • 16/10/2022 - Pothole patching Thursday 27th October 2022.   • 6/10/2022 - With rainfall forecast for the Shoalhaven, Council reminds residents that it may become necessary to close access roads previously impacted by land slips. The trigger is 40mm of rain within any 24-hour period. Council will provide as much warning as possible should this occurs. Maintaining road safety and access across the city remains Council's highest priority. Load limit on this road is 3Tonne

  • 22/09/2022 - Following record rain events, Council has recorded 98 landslides as a high priority, with a focus on 35 sites that are deemed most urgent. We've now finished geotechnical investigations at these 35 sites, leading the way for designs to be completed in the coming weeks. The designs form part of a works package that will go out to tender in October. Load limit on this road is 3Tonne

  • 16/09/2022 - Geotechnical engineers will be conducting a site investigation on Foremans Road, from Friday 9th September 2022. The road will be open during the investigation. Borehole drilling will be conducted to inform the design.

  • 02/09/2022 - Foremans Road is now open with the completion of the interim repair of  the landslip. The road will re-open with an increased road limit of 3Tonne.

  • 17/08/2022 - Advising, Foremans Road will be closed tomorrow, Thursday 18 August, from 9.30am to 12.30pm to finalise the temporary repair at the landslip. The road closure will allow contractors to apply the final seal. Once the seal has been installed the road will re-open with an increased road limit of 3tonne.

  • 16/08/2022 - Foremans Road is now open for residents only, with a 2-tonne load limit. Geotechnical engineers will review the site today and assess the need for repairs before opening the road to all traffic.

    12/08/2022 - Foremans Road closure on Friday 12 August. This Friday our geotechnical engineers are carrying out work to address the hazardous road surface. To allow engineers to safely stabilise the site with erosion protection material (Geocell) the road needs to be closed between 8 am and 3 pm. We appreciate residents understanding and will update you if the weather impacts the closure.

  • 05/08/2022 - Foremans Road, Woodhill - Open. While the road has opened again after the removal of debris please be aware that wet weather may result in the road being slippery with hazardous material on the road surface. Please drive to the conditions of the road. Soil reinforcement and erosion protection material (Geocell) and pavement will be installed from Monday to fix the issue.

  • 04/08/2022 - Foremans Road, Woodhill  - closed Hazardous road conditions have led to the closure of the Road today and tomorrow. While the road is expected to be reopened to local traffic on the weekend, please be aware that wet weather may result in the road remaining closed. Soil reinforcement and erosion protection material (Geocell) and pavement will be installed on Monday to fix the issue.

  • The design has now been finalised for the preferred solution to reinstate appropriate access to Formans Rd. The works will involve a realignment to the existing roadway. Works will start 1st August 2022 and are expected to take approximately 3 weeks to be completed weather permitting. The road will be close intermittently during the works under traffic control.
