New Sanctuary Point Library

At it's meeting on 30 June 2026, Council resolved to continue progressing plans for a new district library and community facility at 196 and 198 Kerry Street, Sanctuary Point. The project will deliver a modern library and flexible community spaces that support learning and community connection.

18/08/2026 - Council is commencing the next phase of the project, which includes:

• Feasibility studies and concept design
• Project delivery and procurement strategy
• Planning and design for future delivery.

About the project

The existing Sanctuary Point Library celebrated its 30-year anniversary in May 2025.

With more than 30,000 residents in the area, Sanctuary Point and the surrounding Bay and Basin communities have outgrown the current library building.

Once delivered, the new library will:

Provide spaces for reading, learning and community activities.
Create welcoming and flexible spaces for people of all ages.
Reﬂect the character of local landscape
Improve connectivity for the village centre precinct
Support the needs of a growing community.
Improve literacy and educational outcomes

History 2025 -2026

On 29 June 2026, Council will consider a $14.4 million loan to support the delivery of a new library. Council has identified this alternative funding model to help minimise further cost increases and keep the project on track. If the loan is approved, the library could be open to the public by the end of 2029. Council will continue to seek alternative funding from state and federal governments.
