Council must conduct maintenance and inspections on the Comerong Island Ferry every five years.Works are necessary to maintain the long-term safety and viability of the service and are due from September 2025 for a period of around 12 weeks. The replacement vessel for the Comerong Island Ferry operates daily for residents only from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
03/12/2025 - Inspection and refurbishment works on the Comerong Island Ferry have been successfully completed. The ferry is now back in service and open to the public.
Council is organizing internal and external contractors to undertake the Comerong Ferry inspection and refurbishment work.
The refurbishment includes sandblasting, ultrasonic sheet testing, re-sheeting and repainting. The works are expected to take around 12 weeks with a further two weeks for compliance – the Certificate of Survey from Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The ferry should be back in service by the end of November.

16/10/2025 - The ferry has been successfully removed from the water to undertake essential repairs and maintenance. This work is expected to take approximately 12 weeks.

08/08/2025 - The final day of ferry operation before the vessel is taken out of service will be 8 September 2025. All island residents are required to relocate their vehicles and waste bins to the mainland before 8 September 2025. Please note: Items cannot be moved on 9 September, as the ferry will no longer be in operation.
