Berry Street - Nowra - Demolition and Remediation

The building at 16 Berry Street has remained vacant since 2014. A comprehensive report conducted in 2021 confirmed the need for building demolition, and site remediation. The site is now subject to Demolish Works Order ON2024/0550.

The latest

30/07/2026 - The rehabilitation of the site is now complete with the new shared user path through the site available for pedestrian use. Barrier mesh around the grassed area will remain in place until the grass has established.

About the project

Full demolition of the existing building and remediation of site. The site is subject to Demolish Works Order ON2024/0550, issued under Item 3 of the Table for General Orders, Schedule 5, Part 1 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 (NSW) (EP&A Act). Details of the order are publicly available on Council’s website, in accordance with the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009.

History - 2026

23/06/2026 - The demolition of the building has now been completed. Works to rehabilitate the site with grass and concrete shared user path will be carried out over the coming weeks, with an anticipated completion date mid-July. Once works have been fully complete, pedestrian access through the site will be restored.

27/05/2026 - Hoarding and scaffolding have been installed along Berry Street. Demolition works are continuing on site and are expected to be completed by mid-June. Site remediation is anticipated to commence in mid-June 2026, with overall project completion forecast between late June and mid-July.

07/05/2026 - Demolition works have commenced on site, with hoarding installed along Berry Street and scaffolding scheduled for installation in the coming weeks. Site remediation is anticipated to commence between late May and June 2026.

16/04/2026 - Works have commenced onsite with the erection of a fenced work zone adjacent to the building in Egans Lane carpark. Initial works are occurring within the building in preparation for the demolition of the building which is anticipated to commence in late April - May 2026.

17/03/2026 - Procurement for the project has been completed and a contractor appointed. Site establishment is scheduled to commence in March 2026 and continuing through to June 2026. The anticipated completion date is late June 2026, subject to weather and site conditions.

28/10/2025 - Procurement dates are currently November 2025 to February 2026

13/08/2025 - The building (adjacent to the art gallery) is no longer fit for use. Council is set to begin procurement phase for the project.
