Artwork exploring the idea of ‘home’ through the lens of local primary school students is now on exhibition at the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery in Nowra.

The exhibition is the culmination of the HOME Program which enabled students from Falls Creek, Greenwell Point, Nowra, Sanctuary Point, and Tomerong Public Schools to connect with local Aboriginal artists, community, language, and culture.

During the three-term program, the students had the opportunity to engage with First Nations artists including Aunty Cheryl Davison, Aunty Deidre Martin and cultural knowledge holder Allen Bloxsome, during a series of hands-on workshops and virtual excursions.

“The Home Program is such an important opportunity for young people in our community to learn about our First Nations culture and history, build respect, understanding, and a deeper connection to the land and community they live in,” said Mayor, Patricia White.

“This is an exhibition not to be missed. It is a true testament to the talent of our local students and the calibre of the First Nations artists they drew their inspiration from during the program,” Cr White said.

“I strongly encourage residents and visitors to the city to get along to the Gallery to view these moving works and support our young and aspiring talent,” she said.

The HOME Program is a collaboration between the Art Gallery of New South Wales, NSW Department of Education’s Arts Unit and Shoalhaven Regional Gallery.

The exhibition runs until Saturday 15 November.
