Progress continues to be made on Council’s financial sustainability plan with almost $1.68 million in cost-saving measures reflected in the quarterly report from January to March 2025.

This brings the balance of savings realised through financial sustainability initiatives to $4.1 million so far, this financial year.

Acting CEO James Ruprai said he was pleased to see progress being made in line with Council’s Sustainable Financial Futures Plan 2024-2029, which sets out a goal of $10 million in savings over the next four years.

“These quarterly reports give both the community insight into Council’s short-term financial health to see how we’re tracking against our annual goals,” Mr Ruprai said.

“In light of Council’s 12 per cent rate increase which was recently approved by IPART, it’s important we show the community how hard we’re working internally to find ways to reduce costs and increase revenue,” he said.

“A lot of good work has been done and continues to be done to improve our financial position.”

The sale of under-utilised plant and fleet also raised $408,000 contributing to the overall one-off savings for this quarter.

The finance report presented to Council at Tuesday’s Ordinary Meeting also gave a progress update on the 75 actions listed in the Sustainable Financial Futures Plan.

It showed that 33 actions had been completed, representing significant progress towards Council’s vision of being financially sustainable. Completed actions include a reduction in operational spending, a review of fees and charges, and internal service reviews of Council departments to capture areas for efficiency and improvement.

On Council’s Financial Sustainability page, the organisation is also reporting every month on how its tracking against the $10 million target with videos and a traffic light graphic to show progress.

The next quarterly update reporting against April, May and June will be presented to Council in August 2025.
