Major rehabilitation works to start on The Wool Road in June
Published on 13 May 2025
Specialised rehabilitation works on The Wool Road in Old Erowal Bay will begin after the long weekend in June following Council’s decision to appoint contractor Fulton Hogan to carry out repair works.
The road was severely damaged in 2024 after extreme rainfall caused a sink hole. Repair works are expected to take up to five months with a temporary single-lane to be constructed so lengthy detours can be avoided.
Deputy Mayor Peter Wilkins said joint funding from the Australian and NSW governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, plus a contribution from Council, would allow the permanent works to get underway now a contractor had been appointed.
“News of the rehabilitation works will come as a relief to residents and we’ll be working with the contractor to minimise delays and communicate disruptions well in advance,” Cr Wilkins said.
“The construction of a single lane will mean that locals won’t have to detour via Tomerong, but motorists should expect delays at peak times when the school and work rush is on,” he said.
The damaged section of road is between Macgibbon Parade and Birriga Avenue. Construction works include:
- Construction of a temporary single-lane side road
- Demolition of existing steel arch culvert (pipe under road)
- Construction of a new 10 metre wide x 2.1 metre reinforced concrete box culverts and base slab
- Construction of culvert headwalls
- Construction of sandstone retaining wall
- Reinstatement of road pavement and asphalt
- Reinstatement of guard rail and line marking.
Route options
Motorists will have a choice of route if travelling between Vincentia and Sanctuary Point / St Georges Basin.
- A single lane will be operational at the repair site (between Macgibbon Parade and Birriga Avenue) under ‘stop go’ arrangements. Outside work hours, an automated traffic light system will be in place. Motorists should expect delays.
- People can choose to detour via Tomerong using Pine Forest Road and Naval College Road. This takes around 20 minutes between Worrowing Heights and Vincentia.
