Are you a family member, friend and/or carer of a person living with disability? Shoalhaven City Council invites community members wanting to be a part of making the Shoalhaven more inclusive and accessible to submit an application to become a member of the Inclusion & Access Advisory Committee (IAAC). 

Council's advisory committees provide advice on the development and implementation of Council’s strategic priorities. They represent one of the many ways that community members can inform Council’s decision-making.

Council is seeking expressions of interest for membership for the following vacant positions:

  • Two (2) family, friends and/or carers of people living with disability who have an interest in advocating for improved access and inclusion for all

Council encourages the appointment of two Indigenous representatives, male and female, on all advisory committees.

What is the Inclusion & Access Advisory Committee?

Guided by lived experience and expertise of Committee members, the Committee provides advice and guidance to Shoalhaven City Council to promote an accessible, inclusive and welcoming community that respects independence and human dignity.

The IAAC is an inclusive space that allows individuals from diverse backgrounds to work together to create conditions for individuals and communities to thrive. Members are supported to participate in the committee in a way that meets their specific needs.

What role does the Committee play in Council?

During meetings, the Inclusion & Access Advisory Committee reviews and discusses Council reports, and provides advice and input to Council on issues affecting people living with disability in the Shoalhaven.

The role of the Committee is outlined in the points below:

  • Provide advice and guidance to Shoalhaven City Council, its staff and residents on accessibility and inclusion
  • Create an accessible, inclusive and welcoming community that respects independence and human dignity by:
    • Ensuring that all residents can participle actively in all aspects of community and civic life and ensure that Council recognises and values the diversity of its community
    • Identifying and addressing barriers preventing people from participating in programs, services and facilities across the city
  • Advocate for:
    • Adherence to the principles of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the NSW Disability Inclusion Act 2014 which will benefit the community
    • Inclusion in our community through recommendations to improve the built environment, changes in community attitudes and behaviours, and creating better systems and processes for meaningful participation of people of all abilities
