Rennies Beach Bushcare receives Keep Australia Beautiful Award

The Rennies Beach Bushcare group has been recognised for their ongoing regeneration works after receiving the Keep Australia Beautiful South Coast Region Environmental Protection Award.

The Environmental Protection Award recognises outstanding achievement in the protection of the natural beach environment, in particular the preservation of local fauna, flora and biodiversity.

Keep Australia Beautiful CEO, Peter Mclean was on hand to present Rennies Beach Bushcare volunteers with their award at a special ceremony on Wednesday 16 November.

The Rennies Beach Bushcare group received the award as recognition for their ongoing regeneration work following illegal damage to the foreshore vegetation in 2003.

Made up of both local residents and holiday home owners, the group was initially formed as a result of the environmental vandalism but has continued to work over the ensuing years focusing on the regeneration of the coastal cliff vegetation.

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Paul Green said the Keep Australia Beautiful Award was a fantastic reward for all the hard work and effort the group had put into the local area.

“Shoalhaven City Council has 70 Bushcare groups and over 700 volunteer members, each of which provide a fantastic service to the City,” said Clr Green.

“I would like to congratulate the members of the Rennies Bushcare Group and Council’s Bushcare Coordinator, Alasdair Stratton on this award and also their efforts in regenerating the local plant life.

“While helping eradicate the effects of the previous needless environmental vandalism, the group has also consolidated vehicle parking areas to help in reducing the impacts on sensitive coastal vegetation and assisted Council in the construction of viewing platforms and fencing.”

“Rennies Beach is one of the most picturesque and pristine beaches on the entire eastern seaboard and I would like to again thank the local Bushcare organisation for their hard work in ensuring it stays this way.”

Located on the southern side of the Ulladulla Urban area, Rennies Beach is an extremely popular recreational area, with local residents and visitors both taking advantage of the beach’s high quality fishing and surfing spots.
