In consultation with the community, Shoalhaven City Council is developing a Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP). The Plan is a legislative requirement of the NSW Disability Inclusion Act (2014) and aims to demonstrate Council’s commitment to people living with a disability on improving access to the full range of services and activities available in the community.
Council’s Director of Corporate and Community, Craig Milburn said, “Council is committed to improving opportunities for people of all ages living with a disability to access inclusive and accessible services and activities available in the community.
“Council is encouraging people living with disability and carers to have their say on how the City can design and implement strategies. We want to hear what people want and need.”
Mr Milburn said strategies will be aimed at:
- providing access to buildings, events and facilities,
- access to information
- accommodating the specific needs of people with disability
- supporting employment of people with disability
- encouraging and creating opportunities for people with disability to access the full range of services and activities available in the community.
The community can complete an online survey at www.shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au/My-Community/Community-services/Disability/Disability-Inclusion-Action-Plan. This will be redirected to an independent consultant’s site.
A paper based or Easy Read survey is available that can be posted to Council or dropped off to the Council Administration office in Nowra or Ulladulla. For a paper version to be sent to you or if you would like to speak to someone and provide feedback, contact Helen Waterhouse, Community Development Officer by Email: Helen.Waterhouse@shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au or Phone (02) 4429 3411.
The community consultation period will close on Friday, 7 October 2016. It is expected a Draft Disability Inclusion Action Plan will be ready for public comment early in 2017.
