Consulting a Funeral Director is recommended at the time of preparation for cremation as they can provide advice regarding the legal, procedural and local requirements. Direct cremation for those preferring no service and no attendance is also offered, if required.
In New South Wales cremation is regulated under the Public Health Regulation (Disposal of Bodies) 2012, under the Public Health Act of NSW. For statutory and regulatory requirements please refer to the comprehensive information available at the NSW Health's website.
There are also industry protocols, which determine the nature and content of coffins destined for cremation. Notably there are guidelines created by the Australasian Cemeteries & Crematoria Association (ACCA) and the Australian Funeral Directors Association. Shoalhaven City Council is a member of ACCA and requires coffins to comply with these guidelines.

Should you wish to collect the cremated remains rather than inter and commemorate them in a cemetery, you may do so, by request, 72 hours after cremation. Please contact Shoalhaven Bereavement Services at least one working day prior to collection so that staff are available to assist you on arrival.
Cremated remains are held in a secure facility for up to 12 months. After this time arrangements must be made for collection or placement.
The cremated remains will only be released to the Applicant or the Executor of the deceased's estate. If someone else needs to collect them, they must have written authority from the Applicant or Executor. The written authority must clearly state:
The cremated remains are contained in a standard plastic cremation urn that is rectangular in shape. The urn, measuring 255mm X 150mm X 125mm, is labelled with an identification certificate. Generally, also attached to the urn will be the name plate that was on the coffin. Please note that occasionally the name plate may not be available to be returned.
If you would like to purchase a decorative urn, there are a range on display in the office or we can assist in ordering further designs from Anakie Pottery or Final Touch. There is no fee for decanting into urns purchased at Shoalhaven Bereavement Services but a decanting fee is payable if you wish to provide your own urn.
When you come to collect the cremated remains, the urn will be placed into carry bag for ease of transport. There is no fee for the collection.
For cremated remains held by Shoalhaven Bereavement Services, the person who applied for the cremation (the Applicant) or the Executor of the deceased's estate is required to issue instructions for the final placement of the cremated remains. Final placement are the arrangements made for the resting place of the cremated remains within a cemetery.
The Applicant or Executor can provide written, signed and dated authority for another person to make the arrangements on their behalf.
