Warrain Crescent - Currarong - Beach Access Upgrade

The Shoalhaven was declared a Natural Disaster Area 14 September 2022 (AGRN 1034) after severe weather and flooding events. This had a major impact on Currarong and surrounding communities, damaging infrastructure and property. As a result of damages, Council is upgrading pedestrian access infrastructure for two beach access ways at Currarong Beach.

About the project

2024 Works history

10/4/2024 - Public access is restricted at the moment as the structure is damaged. Contractor engagement for the works has now been completed by Council. Works are expected to commence at both beach access tracks in early March 2024 and are anticipated to be completed within a six to eight-week period.

This project involves an upgrade of pedestrian beach access infrastructure to improve accessibility, public safety and to reduce use impacts on the coastal environment. Upgrades will be provided for two (2) existing accessways.

Works will involve the replacement of a failed staircase asset which due to severe weather has failed and will require replacement to be brought into line with current engineering standards for the coastal environment.

The works will involve construction of a new Fibreglass Reinforced Polymer (FRP) staircase to replace the existing timber ramp at track 1(PNG, 704KB), and the extension and renewal of timber components for the existing staircase at track 2(JPG, 195KB). The FRP stairs at track 1 are to extend down below normal beach level to cater for future erosion with footings to a suitable depth to minimise the potential for undermining. The renewal and extension of track 2 will also involve extension to below normal beach level allowing for functionality at times of lower dune elevation and storm erosion scour. A concept plan is provided within the ‘Related Documents’ on this project page.

The outcomes of these works will facilitate improved, pedestrian beach access from Warrain Crescent enabling enhanced public amenity, meeting Councils obligations for management of safety, quality and amenities. The works will also result in a reduction of erosion risk and will assist to improve the natural resilience of the immediate coastal environment.

This project is progressing with contribution from a grant funding partnership with the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) under the 2021-2022 Coastal and Estuary Grants Program – Implementation Stream. Additional funding has been obtained from the NSW State Government Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements to facilitate these works.
