Book week officially starts on Saturday with this year's theme, My Secret Power. To celebrate Shoalhaven Libraries have heaps of activities and competitions that will get your child excited about reading.
Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together celebrating Book Week. During this time schools, libraries, booksellers, authors, illustrators and children celebrate Australian children's literature and you will often see children's book character parades and talented librarians creating amazing displays.
This year Shoalhaven Libraries will be performing Tohby Riddle’s Here Comes Stinkbug and Michael Speechley’s The All New Must Have Orange 430. The Readers Theatre will be on at Nowra Library on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th August, before travelling to Ulladulla Library on Friday 23rd August. There will also be storytime sessions at all our branches over the week.
This year Shoalhaven Libraries is running three competitions for young readers.
Kindy to 2nd Grade
Competition participants will be asked to create a superhero with a secret power and decorate one the mask design templates provided.
We want to know their superhero’s name and their secret power too!
For 3rd to 6th Grade
Competition participants will be tasked with creating a comic book cover that introduces us to a new hero and explains their secret power!
Their designs must not be any more than A3 in size but can be hand-drawn, painted, and digital or collage.
You might like to think about the different ways people could have secret powers. Are they a typical superhero – or a spy? Are they a mutant or an assassin? Are they a kid, or an adult, or a creature from another planet?
The Peter Mason Young Writers' Award
This is our first annual Peter Mason Young Writers’ Award in memorial of Peter Mason, a mobile library driver who was loved by children across the Shoalhaven. Peter tragically passed away in 1997 and this award is held in memory of his kindness and friendship.
This competition is for young writers aged 10+. This year, we are asking for writers to write a 1000 word piece using the theme ‘My Secret Power’. Their work may be a short story or illustrated, it may be a poem, an essay or a graphic novel or comic. We will accept both handwritten and digital entries, but it must be no longer than 1000 words (about two A4 sized pieces of paper typed or 4 pages handwritten).
We will have prizes in the form of book vouchers from local booksellers and book packs from Shoalhaven Libraries. We wish to think Harbour Bookshop, Boo Book on Owen, Dymocks Bookstore Nowra and Dean Swift for their ongoing support and generosity.
Head down to your local branch to grab a competition entry form.
