The latest

11/4/2023 - The last stages of the project are being completed in the coming weeks including the asphalt reinstatement of the road. The road has now been opened.

About the project

7/12/2022 - All investigation and design work is complete. The final investigation piece was the Ground Penetrating Radar, this work has now concluded and the design does not need to be changed.  Material procurement is now underway, it is estimated that the main components, concrete culverts will be delivered in 20 weeks time and once they are received construction should take approximately 6 weeks. This means that construction is likely to get underway in May 2023.

The next update will occur once the culverts arrive on site.

The Ground Penetrating Radar Overlay (December 2022) can be viewed in related documents.

13/10/2022 - The latest project scope has been defined and distributed to the representative of the local residents who attended the site meeting on Tuesday, 24th May 2022.

A copy of the project scope and concept plans can be found in the related information on this page.

History

West Cambewarra Cemetery was established in 1874.

A culvert crossing under Bangalee Road (just north of the cemetery gate) is the outlet for a 3.4ha catchment to the west of the cemetery. The northern half of the cemetery is a shallow valley, which receives the water from the upper catchment. This stormwater then collects and exits the site at a pipe network that commences at the intersection of Koloona Dr and Yanderra Rd.

The periodic impact of flood water in the Bangalee Road area has been an issue for many years, the driving force for flooding events at the site are East Coast Low weather patterns which have been recorded since 1860. See related information for photos of recent East Coast low events that occurred in 2015, 2017, and 2020.

This project aims to extend the existing culvert under Bangalee Road and thus transport stormwater through the north western part of the site and thus allow “dry" access to the graves at this location.
