About the project

In 2022 severe weather and large waves during a natural disaster event caused significant damage to this pedestrian beach access path and stairs. Erosion of the embankment has resulted in the loss of sediment filling within the steps, leaving the timber framing only. This damage to the structure of the staircase and stairs, puts the dune at risk of collapsing this beach access asset. For safety reasons, the staircase is closed off to the public until the reconstruction and repair works are completed.

The recent approval for Commonwealth disaster recovery funding marks a key milestone in council's efforts to repair the damage and restore the best functionality to this beach access asset. Communication and progress tracking will be maintained to keep all stakeholders informed throughout the repair process.

Works will involve the replacement of a failed staircase asset, failed due to severe weather and will require the replacement asset be brought into line with current engineering standards for the coastal environment.
