Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for NAIDOC Week

Council kicked off NAIDOC week with a special morning tea celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Shoalhaven.

Local Aboriginal Elder. Aunty Ruth Simms performed a Welcome to Country and spoke on this year’s NAIDOC Week theme. After the morning tea, Council showcased a film produced by Archie Roach called Wash my Soul in the River’s Flow. This film is a love story in song and spoken words.  The film showed a moving story of loss, love and what it means to be truly ‘home’.

This year’s theme for NAIDOC Week – Get up! Stand up! Show up! – encourages all of us to champion change while celebrating those who have already driven and led change in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities over generations.

The Shoalhaven community is encouraged to connect with NAIDOC week and to embrace and enjoy the vital role it plays in celebrating the history, culture, talents, achievements and survival of the oldest continuing culture in the world.
