Closing date extended for NAIDOC awards

There is still time to nominate worthy individuals and organisations from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community for the 2024 Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards. 

Nominations in six categories opened in late February and will close at midnight on Monday 1 April with the winners to be announced at a gala celebration in Nowra on the evening in July. 

The closing date has been extended to give people additional time over the Easter long weekend to get their nominations in. 

Categories include: 

• Elder of the Year (Aunty and Uncle) 
• Outstanding Contribution to the Community (Paid and Voluntary) 
• Young Achiever of the Year (12-25 years) 
• Organisation of the Year (Not for Profit and For Profit) 
• Outstanding Contribution to Reconciliation (Aboriginal and Non-Aboriginal) 
• Caring for Country and Culture

Organisers are particularly keen to see a boost in the number of entries for the Elder of the Year, Young Achiever of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to Reconciliation categories. 

The Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards is an annual event designed to celebrate the talents, achievements and outstanding contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Illawarra and Shoalhaven areas. 

The awards, introduced in 2011, are the result of a collaborative partnership between four councils: Shoalhaven, Kiama, Shellharbour and Wollongong. The 2024 awards are being hosted by Shoalhaven City Council.
