Preparation for Interment

The Shoalhaven Bereavement Services staff will assist Funeral Directors and families of the bereaved in making the necessary arrangements for interment. An Interment Right must be established prior to the preparation of the site for interment (final placement).

Activities in the Shoalhaven Cemeteries and Crematorium are subject to Shoalhaven City Council's Cemeteries, Crematorium and Memorial Gardens Policy and Funerary and Monument Masonry Services Procedure.

Burial

Booking Requirements

Shoalhaven Bereavement Services require a minimum of two full working days between the booking and the proposed interment date.

Forms

Funeral Directors must lodge Interment Application forms with Shoalhaven Bereavement Services by 3pm on the working day before the service. Available opening sizes for grave sites are listed on the form and should be selected in relation to the size, including height of the coffin chosen. However, interments inside monuments are limited in sizing and Shoalhaven Bereavement Services will advise of the maximum available opening.

Removal of Monuments

In some cases, such as a second interment in an existing site, removal of construction or a monument that impedes the interment will be required. This is the responsibility of the estate (Applicant) for the interment and can be arranged with assistance of the Funeral Director.

Confirmation

Once the Interment Right has been confirmed and the interment application has been received, a formal confirmation is issued by email or fax to the Funeral Director. The confirmation will also include billing (quotation) details. This confirmation should be carefully checked and the Bereavement Services office advised immediately of any errors and required corrections.

Cremation

Shoalhaven Bereavement Services can provide information and assistance to those wishing to inter or commemorate cremated remains in one of our cemeteries. Further details can be found on the Cremation and Memorial page.
