Statement from Mayor Patricia White – leave of absence

Mayor Patricia White has issued the following statement regarding her leave of absence. CEO Andrew Constance read the statement to the gallery during the Ordinary Meeting of Council held on Tuesday 25 August.
“It is with a heart full of gratitude and resolve that I write to you today, to request a leave of absence from Council,” Cr White said.
“Following recent medical advice, I am requesting approval to take a leave of absence for the period from 3 August 2026 until 22 September 2026, to undergo urgent medical treatment which I have commenced for breast cancer.
“I am incredibly fortunate to be in the care of an exceptional medical team here in the Shoalhaven. Their expertise and dedication give me full confidence as I begin this journey, and I am deeply grateful for their support.
“As I step away from my daily mayoral duties to focus on my health, I have one sincere request for our community and my colleagues. During this time, I ask that you kindly respect the privacy of my family. My children and grandchildren are my world, and they do not deserve to be exposed to, or forced to read, misleading or negative commentary on social media during what is already a deeply personal and sensitive time. Our family is still recovering from early events in 2026.
“While I have developed a thick skin over the years regarding public criticism, I wish to shield my family from such discourse so that we can focus entirely on my recovery.
“Furthermore, I wish to address the recent atmosphere within the Council Chambers. It is time for everyone to step back from the speculation and rumours that have recently surfaced. These distractions serve no one and do not reflect the standard of conduct our community deserves.
“I respectfully ask that all Councillors and both current and previous Councillors who in recent times have made comments regarding my health conditions cease this behaviour and refocus their energy on what truly matters: our collective responsibility to serve the people of the Shoalhaven. Our community relies on us to conduct ourselves with integrity and to prioritise the issues that affect their daily lives.
“Please know that I remain incredibly positive. I am fully focused on my recovery and look forward to returning to the work I love, serving this community, as soon as my treatment is complete. I truly cannot wait to see you all again.
“Thank you for your understanding, your support, and your continued kindness. It is a privilege to serve you and our communities. I look forward to coming back stronger.”
