Shoalhaven City Council, in partnership with Royal Life Saving NSW, are excited to announce upcoming Grey Medallion programs at the Bay and Basin Leisure Centre, Ulladulla Leisure Centre and Bomaderry Aquatic Centre.
The Grey Medallion program is a water safety and lifesaving skills program designed specifically for older Australian’s. The program is being offered FREE of charge for participants thanks to a grant from Coordinare- South Eastern NSW PHN.
The Royal Life Saving Grey Medallion program provides the Over 65’s with an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of their personal water safety skills and knowledge.
The program will operate in three of Council's Swim and Fitness centres, offer older Shoalhaven residents the opportunity to exercise and have fun while learning skills that may one day save a life.
Unfortunately, older Australians make up a large portion of the drowning statistics in Australia. Last year 58 people aged 65 years or older lost their life due to drowning in Australian Waterways. This may be attributed to older people making a sea change, participating in more aquatic activities in their retirement or overestimating their abilities. Young children are also high risk for drowning. With grandparents typically shouldering more of the responsibility of looking after grandchildren these days, they are often best placed to prevent drowning in children. Having the skills to respond in an emergency is vital.
