Eggciting Reading Adventure

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Amanda Findley launched the Paint the Town ReaD literacy program in the Shoalhaven at the Entertainment Centre forecourt on Monday, 27 March 2017.

To ensure our local children receive the best start in life, Shoalhaven City Council is one of nineteen local councils in 50 Australian communities that has supported The Paint the Town ReaD program.

Paint the Town ReaD motivates communities to read, talk, sing and draw with children from birth, so that they are ready for reading and writing at school.

The morning featured students from Cullunghutti Learning Centre dancing and welcoming the visitors.  Local pre-schoolers enjoyed Mayor Amanda Findley reading to the children “Jack’s Funtastic Day” whilst Auntie Grace Crossley shared a local Aboriginal story and instilled in the children that they are the future.

More than one in five Australian children arrive at school without the skills necessary to make the most of their early education. In some communities, the figure is much higher. Research shows that no matter how good their subsequent teaching, these children can fall further and further behind. They may struggle with literacy, employment, health and happiness for the rest of their lives.

Paint the Town ReaD encourages communities to use a common agenda to read, talk, sing and draw to children using the symbol of an egg. The concept encourages children to read to the Paint the Town ReaD egg to help make it grow and hatch to see the surprise within the egg.

Schools, playgroups and early childhood services can nominate for the reading egg to visit their reading groups.  For more details go to or contact Council’s Community Development Unit, phone 4429 3111.
