Council launches Breastfeeding Friendly Shoalhaven project
July 20, 2011
Shoalhaven City Council is partnering with the Australian Breastfeeding Association to promote a special community project taking place as part of the upcoming World Breastfeeding week beginning Monday 1 August.
Working in line with the 2011 World Breastfeeding Week slogan, ‘Talk to me! Breastfeeding - A 3D experience’, Council’s community development staff and the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) have been working on the ‘Breastfeeding Friendly Shoalhaven’ project.
This innovative project has seen Council staff communicate with over local 300 parents and carers through a series of face to face and community group meetings to help identify needs and concerns surrounding Shoalhaven City breastfeeding and baby care facilities.
Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Paul Green said the consultation process helped identify the need for an increased awareness of baby care facilities in the Shoalhaven.
“Despite a number of organisations, shopping centres and businesses already having baby care facilities a lot of young families are still unaware of their location,” said Clr Green.
“Over 90 precent of the parents consulted said that they would feel more comfortable feeding their baby in venues that were registered as ABA Breastfeeding Friendly venues.
“Since the consultation period, Council’s community development staff have been providing information to businesses on how to be a registered ABA Breastfeeding Friendly Venue.”
Over 120 venues have already registered to be part of the project and can be identified by the ‘Breastfeeding Welcome Here’ sticker displayed in their windows.
The names and locations of these baby care facilities will be promoted in the upcoming Breastfeeding Friendly Shoalhaven wallet size resource card. This valuable list will also be available on both the Shoalhaven City Council and the ABA website, ensuring it is accessible to the community at various levels.
As part of World Breastfeeding Week, Council’s community development staff will be hosting a Breastfeeding Friendly Shoalhaven project information stall at Junction Court on Tuesday 2 August.
The Roxy Cinema is also supporting World Breastfeeding Week with a special Mum n Bubs screening of Larry Crown. This session will be held on Monday August 1 at 11am with support and information from the Family Care Cottage.
