Navy Helicopter Escorts Baton to the Shoalhaven
Next Monday, 5 February 2018 the Queen’s Baton Relay will be arriving in style via Navy helicopter over the Shoalhaven River to start its Nowra leg.
The 42nd day of the Queen’s Baton Relay celebrations in Nowra starts with a free pool party and waterslides from 2pm to 4pm at the Nowra Aquatic Park, the perfect place to witness the spectacular arrival on the riverfront of the Navy helicopter to Greys Beach at 4.20 pm. The Queen’s Baton will then be escorted via Royal Australian Navy Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat over the river by Captain Fiona Sneath to the riverfront outside the Nowra Aquatic Park.
From 4.30pm, the community are invited to line the streets to support our local baton bearers. The Queen’s Baton Relay and convoy will continue its route on Scenic Drive past the hospital, Nowra Showground, down Junction Street, and make a round trip through the city centre and onto the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre at 5:30pm.
On the lawns of Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre, the community can enjoy free entertainment including: the Hot Potato band, St Johns School Concert Band, Joe Visser, circus performances from local children who have attended Circa Workshops from Australia’s leading circus company, Nowra East Public School Choir, Bomaderry Public School Dancers, Haven Lee Signing Choir, Just Dance Performance, Sako a solo classical guitarist, Dance Works and the Groove Trio until 7.30 pm. There will be a range of amazing food stalls to feast on, a jumping castle, face painting, games and even a photo booth for some fun.
The community are asked to dress in “blue” to join the spirit of the Commonwealth
Games. Blue is the colour of our area representing our beaches, one of the colours of the Commonwealth Games, is a colour associated with teamwork and pride and showcases our true blue Aussie spirit.
Please note that intermittent road closures will take place from 1.30pm for short periods of time along Scenic Drive, Junction Street, Kinghorne Street, Worrigee Street, North Street, Berry Street and Graham Street. The Nowra CBD will be affected between 4.30pm and 5.40pm.
Mayor Amanda Findley said, “I encourage the community to come down and support our batonbearers and enjoy the festivities of the day.
“Council appreciates your co-operation and support for this exciting and fun event. Let’s make Nowra shine and showcase it to the rest of the Commonwealth.”
