Shoalhaven City Council was recognised as having the “Most Innovative Youth Week Program in 2017” at the Local Government Week Awards held in Sydney recently. Shoalhaven was named joint winner, sharing the award with Newcastle City Council.
Mayor Amanda Findley said the Youth Week Awards are determined based on the acquittals that every council that receives funding for Youth Week must submit after delivering their event.
“This is an incredible achievement by the Shoalhaven community given that we were up against every other council in NSW that participated in Youth Week 2017,” said Mayor Findley.
“This award recognises the efforts of all the young people, local organisations and Council staff who worked side by side to plan and deliver Youth Week earlier this year.”
“The organisers put a lot of energy into designing events which provided young people with a platform to speak about issues that are important to them and to have their voices heard.”
“I think the diversity of activities is probably what set our program apart from the others. We had everything from youth forums and workshops, youth led radio, intergenerational tech trouble shooting to art sessions, competitions and races. Also, for the first time, there was a LGBTQI Trivia Night organised and run by young people.”
“The diversity of our program helped engage more young people than ever before, and that is what Youth Week is all about - engaging young people and celebrating their contribution to the community.”
Youth Week in the Shoalhaven was held from 31 March to 9 April 2017 and was a Council-led partnership project with Headspace Nowra, Bay & Basin Community Resources, Essential Employment & Training, Bay & Basin Youth Centre Hub, Mission Australia, Ulladulla Youth Centre, Nowra Youth Centre, Southern Cross Housing, Shoalhaven Libraries, Grand Pacific Health & PCYC Nowra.
