Acclaimed artists take to Nowra walls

Emerging muralist and South Coast local, Claire Foxton and acclaimed American artist, Ryan ‘ARCY’ Christenson will join the string of high profile artists to contribute to the Faces of Nowra when they create two murals in the CBD this week.

Both artists will be in Nowra from April 26-30, with their work forming part of Shoalhaven City Council’s Nowra CBD revitalisation strategy.

Claire Foxton will transform the southern façade of Holt Centre, located on Kinghorne Street, while ARCY will paint the rear of Aquatique, in Egans Lane.

Strategic Planner at Shoalhaven City Council, Jessica Volkanovski said the murals provide a unique component to the Nowra CBD.

“The murals in the laneways of Nowra are one of a kind art pieces that cannot be seen in any other town or city in the world,” Ms Volkanovski said.

“The subjects featured on the walls of the CBD represent the unique culture and history of our community, with Guido Van Helten’s Fisherman at Greenwell Point, Adnate’s indigenous portraiture and yellow-tailed black cockatoo and Owen Dippie’s image of Authur Boyd.”

“Claire and ARCY’s murals will be no different, with each of their designs depicting something special about our local area.”

South Coast local, Claire Foxton was recently part of Wonderwalls in Wollongong and Port Adelaide as well as the Brisbane Street Arts Festival.

Claire Foxton has a distinctive photo-realistic style with prominent blue tones and pops of colour, shape and texture.

ARCY’s talent lies in his ability to bring movement and life to walls and his style is punctuated with splashes of bright colours.

Ms Volkanovski said that Shoalhaven City Council is currently working on a public arts strategy to encourage more murals within our community and to bringing life to our streets and laneways.

The Nowra CBD revitalisation strategy aims to create a cultural identity and location residents and visitors can be proud of, and aims to highlight the positive attributes that make Nowra special and an interesting place to visit.

The murals are being funded by the Nowra CBD Revitalisation Committee and have been made possible with the help of the Shoalhaven Historical Society, Shoalhaven Arts Board, the owners of the buildings and adjoining shops impacted and Verb Syndicate.
