Local seniors across NSW are being encouraged to enjoy new experiences, continue learning, impart their skills and have fun in the lead up to the 2017 NSW Seniors Festival.
With the theme ‘Let’s do more together’, the festival promotes inclusive communities and provides an opportunity for seniors to try new things, contribute and remain active and engaged in their local communities.
Formerly NSW Seniors Week, the NSW Seniors Festival has continued to grow each year since it began 59 years ago. It continues to set the benchmark as the biggest event program for seniors in the southern hemisphere.
In the Shoalhaven, the Seniors Festival will run for 10-days from Friday 3 March to Sunday 12 March. There are a number of FREE and discounted events to inspire seniors to eat well, stay active and connect with their local community.
Mayor Amanda Findley encourages seniors to come along and enjoy the events. “The Shoalhaven Seniors Festival is a great time to meet new people. There are so many events that enable you to try new things, socialise, share skills and learn. You can connect not only with others but with activities that you can try for the first time.”
On Friday, 3 March from 10am – 1pm join Council in Jelly Bean Park in Nowra or if wet weather in Nowra School of Arts, Berry Street, to celebrate the launch of the festival featuring the Southern Stompers jazz band. There will be lots of activities involving community partners on the day, so come along and learn and try new things.
During the week Shoalhaven Arts Centre will be hosting a weaving workshop with recycled and collected materials. Local Men’s Sheds will hold open days, or join a celebratory luncheons, high tea or free shows at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre. The Shoalhaven Family History Centre at Pyree will have an open day and Council’s aquatic and leisure centres will be offering “bring a friend for free” throughout the festival week.
