Beach Wheelchairs Now Available in the Shoalhaven

Following feedback from the people living with disability, Shoalhaven City Council has purchased 10 new beach wheelchairs for beaches across the City.

The beach wheelchairs where discussed during consultations for the Shoalhaven Disability Inclusion Action Plan. Young people with disability and their families asked for easier beach access.  With this in mind Council, supported by Council’s Shoalhaven Access Advisory Committee, applied for and was successful in obtaining funding through the NSW Department of Family and Community Services FundAbility Program for the beach wheelchairs.

The beach wheelchairs will provide and improve access to the beach for children and young people living with disability. The child and adult size all terrain beach wheelchairs, will ensure children in particular aged 9-15 years will have access to and are included in mainstream activities such as visiting the beach.

The beach wheelchairs will be available free of charge through Shoalhaven Heads Beach Surf Club, Culburra Beach Surf Club, Sussex Inlet Beach Surf Club, Mollymook Beach Surf Club, Huskisson Beach / Moona - Moona Creek/ Lake Tabourie Holiday Haven Parks and Palm Beach Greville’s Corner Store during beach patrol season or at other times at the discretion of wheelchair site caretakers.

Hirers will need to follow safety procedures and sign a hire and indemnity form.

The locations were strategically chosen to ensure a wheelchair is available within half an hour car travel time for most residents, at sites that have a beach patrolled by Surf Lifesaving Clubs and at Council Holiday Haven Caravan Parks, ensuring safe storage, maintenance and promotion of availability.

Each patrolled beach site will have both an adult and child size chair available for outdoor hire/use only.  Other sites have an adult size chair available for hire/use.

The beach wheelchairs are only to be used at the designated sites and only between the flags in low water. A carer will need to assist in using the beach wheelchair.

The wheelchairs have been made available to the community through a collaboration between FundAbility, Shoalhaven City Council, Surf Lifesaving South Coast Branch, Holiday Haven Tourist Parks and Greville’s Corner Store.
