Community volunteers support busy hot spots

Shoalhaven City Council Rangers have teamed up with Shoalhaven Tourism and Huskisson Community Consultative Body (CCB) volunteers to help support the influx of tourists over the Christmas period at two of the busiest beach tourist destinations in the Shoalhaven, Hyams Beach and Huskisson.

Visitor Services staff will be located at Huskisson and Hyams Beach to assist visitors with local information including: how to get to attractions, where to park, neighbouring picnic areas, bathrooms, cafes etc.  Visitor Services staff will liaise closely with Council Rangers should issues arise. There will be two tourism staff in the field at each of the two locations from 26 December 2016 to 8 January 2017.

Council Rangers Unit Manager, Michael Jarman said, “The tourism staff are great area ambassadors and are supported by the Rangers. We all want to ensure that everyone’s Christmas is incident free, ensuring safety, no parking problems, rubbish is not dumped inappropriately and that people with access requirements can enjoy our beaches and facilities.”

Coralie Bell, Shoalhaven Tourism Manager says, “Having staff out in the region to encouraging visitors to stay longer, and do more while they are here, is an important part of our Visitors Services strategy. We are really proud to stand alongside our rangers to provide this tangible and needed service. Tourists bring over $700mil into the region and supports over 7,000 jobs throughout the Shoalhaven at last estimate. We are always looking at ways to better engage with visitors and local business to make this industry sustainable well into the future.”

The decision to place visitor services staff at Huskisson and Hyams Beach during the busiest times of the day was decided after last year’s Christmas period, when it was highly noticeable that support for visitors, particularly with parking and providing basic destination information, was needed.
