The first Shoalhaven City Council Ordinary Meeting will be held on Tuesday, 4 October 2016 at the Council Chambers in Nowra. It will follow an official ceremony where Mayor Amanda Findley will be sworn into office with the Councillors elect.
The official ceremony will take place at 3.00 pm and include the Mayoral and Councillor Oaths and affirmation with the presentation of the Mayoral Chains. The Mayoral Chain bears on its links, the names of all the Mayoral predecessors and is a tradition of government that each new link in the chain is placed in line joining together the past and the future.
A smoking ceremony will be held to acknowledge the traditional owners of the Shoalhaven region. Smoking ceremonies use various native plants to produce smoke that aims to cleanse and refresh the space in which the ceremony takes place. It is carried out to bring peace, healing and justice to the local community.
Council has had a long history of collaboration with local Aboriginal communities within the Shoalhaven region. The first Aboriginal Alderman of the Shoalhaven was Ambrose Golden Brown who is a descendent of Tomakin, Wandandian and Murramarang clans. The performers in the Smoking and Welcome ceremony are direct descendants of Ambrose and the clan clusters within the region of the Yuin nation. Council has an ongoing commitment to collaborate with all people of our City and recognise the unique cultural diversity within our local government area.
Mayor Amanda Findley said, “I look forward to representing the City and the people for the next four years. Together we will maintain and grow our resources, our economy and ensure a sustainable future.”
The public is invited to attend the ceremony and first Ordinary Meeting that commences from 3pm in the Council Chambers at the Shoalhaven City Council, Bridge Street Nowra.
