Shoalhaven City Council along with the Mollymook Outrigger Canoe Club will host the Single and Double Outrigger Canoe Marathon State Titles in Ulladulla on Saturday 12 March and the six man Outrigger Canoe Ocean Regatta on Sunday 13 March 2016.
The event is expected to attract around 350 competitors from over 20 clubs in New South Wales.
The Mollymook Outrigger Canoe Club will host the regatta from Ulladulla Harbour and the paddlers will race along the coastline for either 10km (short course) or 18km (long course).
Depending on the weather conditions, they will either race north or south.
Mayor Joanna Gash said Council are proud to sponsor the regatta and to support community sport in the region.
“We are very pleased to see this exciting event return to the Shoalhaven for a fifth year as it brings competitors from all over the country and from all walks of life to our region to compete,” said Clr Gash.
“This event provides an opportunity to showcase our region not only to hundreds of competitors, but also to their family and friends as well as event officials, media and spectators.
“I am pleased to see the Shoalhaven actively promoted for the sport of outrigging, which is a relatively new, but growing sport in Australia.
“Outrigger canoe paddling has its origins in the coastal culture of the Pacific rim region about 30,000 years ago, with canoes playing an integral role in the survival and transmigration of ancient cultures.
“Outrigger canoeing has many associated traditions, including the blessing ceremony for the canoes and the competitors, which will be held in Ulladulla Harbour from 8.15am on Sunday morning.
“I extend a very warm welcome to all of the regatta’s visitors to the Shoalhaven and I wish them all the best during their stay in the region.”
Mayor Gash said the Outrigger Canoe Marathon State Titles and Ocean Regatta form part of Council’s Sports Tourism Program.
