Shoalhaven City Council is advising local residents to the closure of the wooden footbridge located on Ben’s Walk, Nowra.
The bridge has been deemed unsafe following an inspection by Council staff and a consultant engineer.
Director of Assets and Works, Ben Stewart said the eroded bank adjacent to the bridge foundations needed repairs as a result of erosion to the piers.
Mr Stewart said the erosion had been exacerbated by the recent August floods.
“Council is advising the local community that the footbridge on Ben’s Walk will be closed in the short term to allow stabilisation of the bank” said Mr Stewart.
“An inspection has found significant erosion and a landslip around the eastern abutment which occurred following the floods.”
“This has reduced the stability adjacent to the existing pier making it unsafe for public use.”
Mr Stewart said he was reminding local residents to respect the signage and barrier placed on the bridge to ensure public safety.
The bridge is expected to be closed for a minimum of three weeks while the timing of interim repairs will depend on technical engineering advice.
