Mayor’s relief Fund launched to assist flood affected local residents

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Joanna Gash is calling on the community to donate and assist local residents affected by the recent rains.

The Shoalhaven has been buffeted by heavy rains over the past few days with over 70 local homes affected by flooding in Sussex Inlet, Sanctuary Point and Shoalhaven Heads.

The rising floodwater has also had an effect on the area’s farmers with a number of local properties suffering damage and losing valuable feed.

Council will be making assistance available to those residents suffering extreme hardship and a loss of possessions.

Mayor, Joanna Gash said that with the rain event causing flash flooding right throughout the area a large number of local residents had been affected by the weather event.

The Mayor said she was calling on the local community to donate to the Mayor’s Relief Fund set up to assist those that had suffered damage as a result of the flood.

“The recent east coast low sitting just off the local coastline has caused widespread damage to much of the Shoalhaven,” said Clr Gash.

“With parts of the area receiving over 470mm of rain in just over 36 hours it was inevitable that a number of properties would receive damage as the result of such a deluge of rain.

“Given the impact of the storm event I am calling on all local residents to donate money to the Mayor’s Relief Fund and assist those most heavily impacted by the storm.”

“With a lot of residents suffering serious damage to their properties and contents it is important that we gather as a community and support those that that need it most.”

“Hopefully the local community will be able to raise enough money to ensure all of those affected are able to be supplied with some of assistance in getting back on their feet.”

“The residents of the Shoalhaven have proven themselves to be a tough yet compassionate community in dealing with natural disasters.”

“I certainly encourage all local residents to dig deep and help assist those affected by the recent weather event.”

The Mayor said local residents are able to donate to the Mayor’s Relief Fund by visiting the cashiers at the Nowra or Ulladulla Administration Buildings.

An online donations system is currently in the process of being set up and will be completed early next week for those residents wishing to donate via this process.

Details will be released once the online system has been completed.

Local residents that have suffered extreme hardship or a loss of possession are able to apply for funding through the Mayor’s Relief Fund by contacting the Mayor’s PA, Rachel Marshall on 4429 3251.

The relief fund will not be able to accept the donation of goods.
