Shoalhaven City Council is inviting local residents to unleash their inner musician and join in tinkling the ivories on the refurbished piano recently placed in the Nowra CBD.
Council placed a Community Piano in the Thorough_Fair arcade, adjacent to Berry Street, last week after enlisting the services of the local community in revamping the donated instrument.
Mayor, Joanna Gash said she had been overwhelmed by the community reaction to the piano saying she had been delighted to hear reports of dozens of local residents sitting down to play a tune throughout the day.
The Mayor said the piano had been placed within the Thorough_Fair as part of the Nowra Alive and Building Community: One Handshake at a Time projects.
“The concept of dropping a piano in the middle of the CBD is a novel and unique approach to building community and bringing people closer together,” said Clr Gash.
“Council is providing local residents with an opportunity to sit down and create music in the CBD which will hopefully lead to the creation of friendships and the adding of a dash of colour to people’s days.
“While placing a piano in the street may seem unusual to some, it is all part of a larger concept aimed at making the area a safer and more connected place to live.”
