Shoalhaven City Council will be hosting renowned community development expert, Jim Diers at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre from 3pm on Monday 1 June as part of the ongoing ‘In Conversation’ series.
The free workshop will explore the relationship between Local Government and the building of more activated and sustainable communities.
Mr Diers will also use the seminar to outline his prior experience in assisting associations and organisations develop caring and inclusive towns.
Mayor, Joanna Gash said Mr Diers had a lifetime of experience in the development of communities having served as the founding director of the City of Seattle’s Department of Neighbourhoods between 1988 and 2002.
Since then, Mr Diers has continued his work in community organising and development at the University of Washington as well as serving on the faculty of the Asset-Based Community Development Institute.
“Jim Diers has built a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and respected community building experts in the world,” said Clr Gash.
“A highly sought after speaker, facilitator and author Mr Diers travels the world to deliver speeches, present workshops and provide technical assistance to community associations, non-profit organisations and governments.
“Mr Diers will use the upcoming workshop to outline the tools that can be used to strengthen social capital, revitalise democracy and support community plans and projects.”
“Having dedicated his life to the building of relationships and engaged communities Mr Diers will also share stories to illustrate the value of these partnerships.”
The Mayor said that this will be an interactive workshop giving participants ample opportunity to contribute to discussion.
