Shoalhaven City Council has received a ‘Highly Commended’ honour in the Climate Adaptation Category at the Australian Coastal Awards recently held at Cape Schanck, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.
Council was recognised alongside project partners Eurobodalla Shire Council and Whitehead and Associates Environmental Consultancy for the research and development of the South Coast Regional Sea Level Rise Policy and Planning Framework.
Both Councils combined with the external consultancy to commission the report following the NSW Government’s decision to withdraw advice on sea level rises and recommendation that Councils consider adopting projections widely accepted by competent scientific opinion.
General Manager, Russ Pigg said he was extremely pleased to see both Councils, in particular the professional staff, recognised for their ongoing commitment to the development of an innovative environmental adaptation and risk management framework.
“Shoalhaven and Eurobodalla Councils were recognised for displaying initiative and innovation in developing the Sea Level Rise Policy and Planning Framework and providing new information on how global sea level rise projections apply to the local area,” said Mr Pigg.
“Council was able to assess the consultant’s findings and recommendations and while the sea level rise benchmarks finally adopted was not at the higher levels recommended by ‘Whitehead’, Council has used the modelling options presented in the report.”
The Peron Naturaliste Partnership received the Climate Adaption Award for their integrated and strategic approach to the management of West Australia’s southwestern coastline.
