Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Joanna Gash has today welcomed world renowned street artist, Guido Van Helten to the area as she launched the exciting THOROUGH_FAIR art project.
Developed as part of the ongoing Nowra Alive scheme, THOROUGH_FAIR is a week-long event that will see a disused CBD Laneway transformed into a living and breathing ‘Live Gallery Walk’.
As part of the project, Council has commissioned Guido Van Helten to create a large mural at the entrance to the laneway, encapsulating the spirit and history of the Shoalhaven.
This exciting event will culminate on Wednesday evening with the hosting of the THOROUGH_FAIR public event that will see local residents mixing with street artists and musicians in a melting pot of food, music and art.
Mayor, Joanna Gash said she was extremely excited about the upcoming event saying the project was a key component in Council’s efforts to breathe colour and life into the Nowra CBD.
“The entire week long THOROUGH_FAIR event is an exciting new avenue for Council and one that has been born out of the Nowra Alive project,” said Clr Gash.
“It is an honour for Council to be hosting an artist of the calibre of Guido Van Helten, a man who has been commissioned to undertake street art murals throughout the world.
"After viewing a number of examples of his work it is easy to see why Guido is regarded as one of the world’s most innovative and talented street artists.”
“Having studied the area over the preceding weeks, Guido will be using this knowledge to create a unique representation of the area through his work.”
“Mr Van Helten will commence his work from tomorrow, taking the next five days to create a large mural on the adjoining wall of the Egans Lane laneway.”
“You can come down and see him create his work onsite and follow his progress on Council’s Facebook page.
Mayor, Gash said Guido’s work throughout the week is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what is taking place over the next few days.
The Mayor said that with a number of school visits and artists talks planned for the week, the event will culminate with the taking place of THOROUGH_FAIR on Wednesday night.
“THOROUGH_FAIR has been created to celebrate and encourage the amazing amount of artistic talent we have here in the Shoalhaven,” said Clr Gash.
“I would certainly encourage local residents to come down to the event on Wednesday afternoon from 4pm and take part in what is sure to be a diverse evening of entertainment.”
“With music from Southerly Change, street artists and food vendors on offer there is sure to be something for the entire family.”
“Council has been clear in its commitment to revitalising the Nowra CBD and while it is early days, it has been particularly encouraging to see the difference Nowra Alive has made already.
THOROUGH_FAIR will take place in the Egans Lane Laneway (next door to the Arts Centre) from 4pm – 8pm Wednesday 17 December.
