Replacement of Milton Showground Stadium roofing and cladding commenced
May 20, 2014
Shoalhaven City Council has commenced the removal and replacement of roofing and cladding at the Milton Showground Stadium.
The commencement of the first stage of works last week exposed significant rusting of the existing purlins, meaning the structures will need to be replaced.
Director of Assets and Works, Ben Stewart said a delay in the project has resulted as Council wait for the new purlins to be delivered prior to the existing roof being replaced.
Mr Stewart said the removal of the ceiling had enabled a detailed inspection of the existing roof structure for the first time, saying that some of the roof components that were previously hidden behind the gutters had become visible and were in some places in poor condition and significantly corroded.
“Council would have liked to identify the corrosion earlier, however with the existing cladding material containing asbestos and the frequent use of the building by a range of community groups it was not possible to undertake invasive investigations of the roof structure before the works commenced,” said Mr Stewart.
“The roof replacement is scheduled subject to the prevailing weather as any water penetration will have an adverse effect on the existing timber sports floor.”
“Council is currently working with local contractors, Batmac in reviewing the works schedule however there will be a short period where work on site will cease until all the new materials are available.”
