Red Ribbon surfboards coming to the Shoalhaven
August 15, 2011
Shoalhaven City Council will be hosting two very special surfboards at both the Nowra Administration Building and Nowra Library as part of the Red Ribbon Tour, a special program designed to raise awareness surrounding the HIV/AIDS virus.
With over 30 million people estimated to have died from AIDS, a further 33 million currently infected and 2.5 million people becoming infected annually, the Red Ribbon Tour is hoping to bring further attention to this global disease.
The Red Ribbon tour will see the two specially designed surfboards displayed along the South Coast from 19 September – 17 October, with organisers encouraging residents to view the exhibition and become more aware of the AIDS epidemic.
As an added incentive, community members viewing the exhibition will be given the chance to win one of two boards simply by texting a competition number found on the boards.
Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Paul Green said with 16 million children having been orphaned as a result of the disease he hoped exhibitions like the Red Ribbon Tour would better educate residents to the effect AIDS is having throughout the world.
“It is devastating to see the effect this disease is having on people across the globe but especially in places like Africa, where an estimated two thirds of the people infected with AIDS are currently located,” said Clr Green.
“Some countries in Africa, including Botswana and Swaziland have over 20 percent of the population infected with the disease.
“This is having a terribly detrimental effect on not only health but things like schooling, productivity, growth and development. Not to mention individual households.”
“Projects like the Red Ribbon Tour are an excellent way of gaining more public attention for the victims of this terrible disease and helping take further steps in finding a cure.”
“I commend the good work of the Red Ribbon Tour and would encourage all local residents to visit the exhibition at either the Shoalhaven Library or Nowra Administration Building.”
The Red Ribbon surfboards will be available for viewing at the Nowra Library from 19 September – 3 October and the Nowra Administration Building Foyer from 3 October – 17 October.
