Book Week celebrations coming to the Shoalhaven
August 11, 2011
Shoalhaven City Libraries will be hosting a number of events and competitions as part of upcoming Book Week celebrations, running from Saturday 20 August – Friday 26 August.
The longest running children’s festival in Australia, Book Week allows public libraries the opportunity to celebrate Australian books, authors and illustrators.
Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Paul Green said he was encouraging local Primary School students to take part in one of the many competitions on offer as part of Book Week celebrations saying the week long activities planned at Shoalhaven Libraries were aimed to help highlight the importance of reading.
“Reading at a young age assists a child’s emotional and social development while also helping in the building of motor skills and concentration levels,” said Clr Green.
“Developing a love for books at a young age has also proven to provide academic advantages, higher levels of language development and will offer immeasurable benefits as the child becomes older.
“Book Week is about celebrating the joys of reading while also paying tribute to the amazing array of authors and illustrators we have here in Australia.”
“I would encourage all local Primary Schools to get behind Book Week and enter one of the many competitions or take part in one of the events celebrating the week at Shoalhaven Libraries.”
Shoalhaven Libraries will be running three competitions as part of Book Week celebrations. Children in Kindergarten – Year 2 will able to take part in a colouring competition while those in Years 3 – 6 can participate in a creative writing exercise focusing on an imaginary travel blog.
Further to this, the annual Peter Mason Memorial Award will be presented to the Primary School student who creates the best book trailer from one of the CBCA shortlist titles. Similar to a film trailer, examples of book trailers can be found on Youtube.
