Council to install Shoalhaven River fishing platform
December 19, 2013
Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Joanna Gash has welcomed a $25,000 funding grant from the Recreational Fishing Trust (NSW Department of Primary Industries) to provide a fishing platform on a section of the Shoalhaven River bank.
The platform will be erected on an already popular recreational fishing spot located on Council owned land along the eastern end of Bolong Road.
Mayor, Joanna Gash said the platform will provide local residents with increased fishing opportunities while also protecting the bank from further erosion.
“Council is certainly pleased to receive grant funding to assist in the provision of a fishing platform along Bolong Road,” said Clr Gash.
“The platform will not only provide local fisherman with safer access to the Shoalhaven River but will assist in mitigating foreshore erosion.
“Council will incorporate the provision of the platform into the current Council provided rock protection work.”
“As a keen fisherman I am certainly looking forward to trying my luck on this exciting new facility.”
The project was planned in partnership with Riverwatch, Department of Primary Industries, local landholders and the Southern Rivers CMA.
It is anticipated that work will begin in the first quarter of 2014.
Mayor, Joanna Gash said that funding applications will continue to be submitted to other programs in a bid to extend the rock protection both east and west from the project site.
An extension of the rock wall would provide bank protection to a stretch of the Shoalhaven River identified in the 2004 Foreshore Definition Study as a high risk erosion site.
