Shoalhaven City Council wins 'Overall Environmental Management' in the World Environment Day Awards 2014

Shoalhaven City Council is proud of the extensive Environmental Management program that we are able to offer our community. This program recently won a United Nations Association of Australia award. Some of the key projects which were recognised include:

  • Renewable energy projects - Council has over 96kW's of solar panels on community assets. We are also installing a 100kW Mini Hydro project to meet the energy needs of the Milton Water Filtration Plant.

  • Waste Management - Council runs a city-wide home composting program to reduce organic waste going to landfill. We also run Magical Mystery Tours of our waste facilities and run other community based arts projects.

  • Council runs an estuary health program as well as other waterwise education initiatives like the Tapstar shows.

  • The Northern Shoalhaven Reclaimed Water Management Scheme (REMS) is one of the largest and most complex water recycling schemes undertaken by an Australian regional water authority. It has increased the long-term sustainability of local dairy farms through increased pasture production during dry periods and reduced usage of potable water for farm operations. Over 16,000ML of reclaimed water has been reused in the last 13 years.

  • We have the first public Biobank in southern NSW. Garrad Reserve in Narrawallee.

Council is striving to adapt to climate change. We have several partnerships with Universities looking at increasing the resilience of coastal villages as well as progressing towards a response framework addressing future sea-level rise. The Sea Level Rise partnership is believed to be the first of its kind in NSW and will serve as a model for other councils. The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage expects that this project will inform stage 2 of the NSW coastal reform and NSW Coastal Expert Panel.
