As part of the Speed Monitoring Program in the Shoalhaven, variable message signs are now active in Millbank Road, Terara. Complaints by residents, speed counts and police advice all indicated that speed is a problem at this location.

The program uses radar electronic message signs to measure the speed of approaching vehicles. Motorists approaching too fast receive a warning message. The message sign also collects traffic data which will monitor reduction in speed and help to develop a longer-term solution if drivers continue to speed.

This road safety initiative is partly funded by Transport for NSW as part of the Local Government Road Safety Program.

Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley said the Speed Monitoring Program protects pedestrians and other vulnerable road users by warning speeding drivers to slow down in high pedestrian areas.

“Sadly, in the NSW Southern region, the statistics show that pedestrians account for 7% of all fatalities”, Clr Findley said.

“Council’s program will target nine locations this year and results of the program will help develop local solutions to make roads safer for vulnerable road users”.

“It’s vital that everyone, residents and visitors to the Shoalhaven, play a part in keeping our roads safe”, Clr Findley said.

The Speed Advisor App is a free smartphone app, which is designed to reduce speeding and save lives. This driver’s app features:

  • Spoken and visual warnings when the speed limit is exceeded

  • Accurate speed zone information across the entire NSW road network

  • Announcements when a school zone is active

  • Day and night modes.

Driving too fast is the single biggest contributor to death and injury on NSW roads. In the Shoalhaven between 2015 and 2019, there were 376 speed related crashes resulting in 638 fatal and serious injury casualties.
