Shoalhaven City Council is asking land owners to be on the look out for potential infestations of Parthenium Weed.

Mayor Amanda Findley is asking landholders to report any new or unusual plants they may see growing on their property or roadside.

“The prohibited priority weed was discovered in Kiama before Christmas, it is the first time Parthenium Weed has been found in south-eastern NSW,” she said.

“Council is working with Local Land Services, Illawarra District Weeds Authority and the Department of Primary Industries to keep this devastating weed in check,” said Clr Findley.

“According to the NSW Department of Primary Industry this weed has been detected in a number of locations in NSW, since April last year. We really don’t want it to get a foothold here in the Shoalhaven,” she said.

“We are asking community members to be vigilant and to alert our Environment Services team of any suspected sightings.

“Parthenium weed spreads rapidly, is dangerous to grazing animals and reduces crop and land values. Contact with the plant or pollen can cause serious allergic reactions in people,” said Clr Findley.

If you suspect your property may be impacted contact Council’s Environmental Services team on 4429 3610 or call the NSW DPI Biosecurity Helpline 1800 680 244.

Shoalhaven City Council supports an extensive weeds program that includes inspections of private and public lands, priority weed spraying, community weed control days and use of spray and environmental contractors to meet seasonal demands.
