Government Initiatives

JobSeeker Payment

The Australian Government has temporarily expanded eligibility for JobSeeker Payment. If you are a casual employee whose income has been reduced you may be eligible to apply for the JobSeeker Payment. Income tests still apply.

Apply online through your myGov account or visit a centrelink office.

You will need information about your income, where you live and who you live with. You will NOT need an Employment Seperation Certificate or information about your savings of assets.

JobKeeper Payment

The Federal Government has announced a wage subsidy scheme. Referred to as the JobKeeper payment, the scheme aims to provide wage subsidies to businesses that are significantly affected by COVID-19.

Unfortunately, it does not appear to apply to Councils. The scheme is limited to employers who have a 30-50% reduction in turnover. Councils primary source of income is rates and government grants which are not impacted by the operational changes.

There is strong advocation for the program to be extended to Councils; however, at this stage Council is ineligible.

Free Childcare - Relief Package

The Federal Government has announced a relief package aimed to cover childcare fees for the next 6 months.

Many families have cancelled enrolments to avoid paying the gap between childcare subsidy and the overall fee during absences, and as result, centres have faced significant declines in revenue, resulting in staff being stood down and closures. Under this new package the government will pay providers a fee based on their attendance rates prior to March 2. In return for receiving these payments, childcare services will be required to ensure families are not charged a fee, including an out-of-pocket or gap fee.

This new funding is provided directly to the childcare operators. The existing childcare subsidy and additional childcare subsidy payments will not apply for as long as this scheme is in place.

Under this new arrangement you can keep your child home but retain their place or send them to care - either way there is no fee to parents.

Contact your childcare provider directly to discuss your childs enrolment and attendance.
