Parks & Recreation

Responsible for the management and development of a large network of open space within the City.  Most parks, sports fields and natural areas are provided, maintained and improved by Council.

The main aim of Shoalhaven Parks is to improve the quality of existing facilities.  We are doing this by providing new play equipment, putting BBQs and picnic tables in our parks, planting more trees for shade and aesthetics, upgrading sporting facilities and improving access to natural areas, to name a few.

Parks

A hierarchy of parks has been developed across the City to ensure that all residents are within reach of a diverse range of recreational opportunities.  Four regional parks have been designed to provide high quality recreation facilities such as playgrounds and picnic facilities, whilst district and local parks have been developed to provide access to the water and outdoor recreation opportunities on a smaller scale.

Sportsgrounds

A hierarchy of sportsgrounds has also been developed across the city.  In addition to traditional field and court sports, Council provides facilities for a broad range of activities including equestrian competition, skateboarding, BMX and rowing.

Natural Areas

Shoalhaven City Council manages over 3,000 hectares of natural areas.  This includes foreshore reserves, beaches and bushland.  Many of these areas are home to endangered plant and animal species and need to be managed in a manner appropriate to the circumstances.  Many areas of the Shoalhaven also contain significant Aboriginal cultural sites.  The management of these includes consultation with the local Aboriginal community and development of restoration plans.

Overall the challenges involved in the management of recreational open space in the Shoalhaven are numerous.   Council is being assisted by the efforts of volunteers in parks, sports fields and natural areas.  This participation benefits the community in a wide variety of ways and we encourage anybody to get involved.  To find out more about becoming a volunteer, or for information on Shoalhaven Parks please contact the Parks and Recreation Unit on 4429 3371.

Bushcare

Volunteers working in Shoalhaven bushland have achieved some outstanding results. Highlights are included in the Shoalhaven Bushcare News.

Shoalhaven City Council invites you to join or form a Bushcare Group which will carry out restoration work on Council managed land, these groups are a way of bringing together the resources of Council and the community to better manage this valuable asset.
