Gas FlareA revolutionary project to convert waste gases to electricity is proving to be a winner for the Shoalhaven environment.

The innovative environmental project, which extracts methane gas from landfill and converts it to usable electricity, was opened last year at Council's West Nowra Recycling and Waste Depot.

Australian Gaslight Company (AGL), under contract to Council, completed the first stage of the project in 2001, which saw more three kilometres of pipes installed into the landfill site.

Gas drilling rigCouncil considers that this is one of the most exciting environmental energy projects ever constructed in NSW and will deliver a terrific boost to Shoalhaven air quality and to the local government.

More than 49 vertical gas wells have been installed up to 15m deep to extract the valuable landfill gas.

Gas Generator UnitAn electrical generator has been commissioned to convert about 400 cubic metres/hour methane gas into electricity.

Council views that this is a great example of Council and the private sector working together to reduce the negative environmental effects of landfill gas emissions.

Opening of Gas PlantThe project is being managed under an agreement with AGL in which infrastructure and construction is provided by AGL, with Council assuming control and ownership on completion.

The volume of gas being extracted from the West Nowra landfill site is able to supply enough energy to power around 1000 homes for 15 to 20 years.

Due to the significant environmental importance of the West Nowra project, NSW Government, through the Sustainable Energy Authority (SEDA) provided capital funding to AGL to assist the viability of the project.
