New Shoalhaven Rural Privet Officer

Return to:

Rural Privet Officer

My name is Greg Thompson, and I have been appointed as the Privet Control Officer for the period until June 2004.  Over the past 8 years, I have worked part time for Council in developing and implementing natural resource strategies in Broughton Creek, Currambene Creek, Burrill Lake and Narrawallee Inlet.  I have also been active in my local landcare group (Brogers Creek) and in the Kangaroo Valley Pony Club and the Show Society.

I believe that the Privet Program offers the Kangaroo Valley and Broughton Creek communities a great opportunity to really get privet under control. I have a team of 4 work for the dole volunteers and we work with private landowners every Thursday and Friday.  Most landowners continue with the control work after our maximum 2 days at any one site.  We are actively working with landcare/bushcare groups at Brogers, Berry, Upper Kangaroo River and Kangaroo Valley town.  A spray program is underway along Council roadsides and on some of the large privet forests along the Kangaroo River.  And, in most areas, the natural regeneration of rainforest species has rapidly replaced the weeds removed.

By June next year, the main Catchment areas of Brogers, Sawyers, Nugents, Bundewallah and Bong Bong Creeks and the Upper Kangaroo River can be free of all flowering privet.  In Kangaroo Valley, the privet problem can be reduced to several large infestations along the river, while the eastern portion of the Broughton Creek Catchment Area can become largely free of privet.
