The month of May saw the commencement of the Privet Teams activities. Many Landowners have already made a start with controlling Privet on their properties and the teams labour for a day is seen as a tangible encouragement for those efforts. Wattamolla is seen as a high priority area for the Privet Control Strategy. The river corridor contains Privet in varying densities, more or less along it’s entire length. The small leaved variety (Ligustrum sinense) seems to be the more serious problem in most of the areas which have been visited (dark areas on the map). Increasing community awareness will be the fundamental basis for success of this campaign. There is an urgent need to contain infestations whilst preventing new ones from forming. It may be tempting to overlook a couple of small plants when it seems as though it’s everywhere, and other areas have bigger problems. However, owners and managers are strongly urged to remove small plants before they have a chance to flower and set seed. This will prevent a whole new generation of seed from being introduced into the environment. As with human health, prevention is always better than cure. |
