Native Look-alikes

A Stream Processes Workshop held in May at Upper Kangaroo Valley was an excellent opportunity for participants to access technical advice and make use of support programs on offer from various agencies.

A full morning of presentations was followed by site visits and an opportunity for hands-on in the afternoon.

Display boards showcased some of the local initiatives to date including the Aerial Privet Survey undertaken by contractors for the Sydney Catchment Authority.

One of the participants approached me with grave concerns on the moderate level Privet rating which had been allocated to her property along a section of Brogers Creek.

A site inspection the following day revealed a healthy forest of Backhousia where moderate level Privet had been mis-identified, and only a minor occurrence of Small Leaved Privet.

This came as a relief to the landowner concerned who was beginning to think that she had a major problem.

If in doubt about species identification, please contact the Privet Officer before commencing removal or control strategies.
