Local knowledge and recent observations have revealed that cattle find Privet rather delicious. This is despite Privet being high in Phenolic compounds which inhibit the digestive enzymes of potential predators. It has been suggested that grazing Privet may be used as an adjunct to other control measures. Perhaps using cattle as living mulcher machines to reduce the bulk of the problem. As the cattle favour only the leaves and do not eat the stems and roots, grazing alone will not eradicate the problem. Using this strategy will need to be followed through with “Cut and Paint”, prescribed burning, slashing or mowing. |
